David Castaneda

I appreciate very much your foundation and the funds provided to support my educational goals. These  funds will not only facilitate the completion of my academic goals, but also  allow our family to stay with minimal loans as I go through school. Our family serves overseas in the country of Lebanon, utilizing my profession and experience in community development and humanitarian relief. Working overseas without major school debt will also be a great blessing.

I have often felt  like in light of my circumstances, pursuing a graduate degree is achieving  the impossible. As a single parent working multiple jobs and going back to  school toward a graduate degree, receiving this scholarship is more than just  financial support. This scholarship is a push of momentum, it's encouragement  and an honoring moment of feeling "seen" for the future I'm trying  to build for myself and my daughter. This scholarship is a huge financial relief and I couldn't be more thankful.

I am incredibly honored to be a recipient of this scholarship. God has been stretching my husband and I to be more generous with our finances and trust him to provide. As soon as I found out, tears filled my eyes as I was reminded of how faithful our God is. Thank you so much and know that this inspires me to continue learning and growing both as a Christian and leader.

"It was not until high school that I started to develop a clearer picture of what that service might look like. In the 9th grade I designed a way to transport a biosand filtration system to communities affected by natural disasters using a standard shipping container. That was when I realized I had come across something that I not only loved to do but could do to serve others. Since then, I have presented my design to organizations like Rotary to raise money to build a working prototype and have written a 4,000-word research paper on possible improvements to the system."

"God has created me with a passion for taking care of livestock and a love of science.  From a young age, I have been responsible for taking care of the family livestock and love attending their needs. I am eager to learn how best to heal their ailments and find joy in seeing them return to health. This has led me to seek a pre-medicine/veterinary degree with hope to use my career to serve others in the local community and through short-term missions."

"Even before I knew what I wanted to do as a career, I knew it had to involve some sort of service; it would have to be a career where my job would be to help others. This is part of the reason I was drawn to seminary, along with other people from my home church, college professors, and friends who all encouraged me to be a pastor. That’s the joy of being a pastor! Pastors not only help people physically, but also spiritually. Their job is to point others to the Ultimate Helper, Jesus, the Savior of the Universe! There is no greater joy than telling others about Him. It doesn’t get much better than this!"

"I could have ended my educational journey with my bachelor's degree, but there is something larger I am called into: to think of theology and its presence in the world critically. I am passionate to learn more about the intersection of these human experiences and Christianity, which will equip me to be a better minister and teacher. Therefore, I feel called into pastoral work within urban communities, especially in the community I grew up in since I am aware of its needs. I also plan to pursue my PhD to become a theology professor teaching homiletics and pastoral care."

"I care deeply about issues of land restoration and protection, particularly in more heavily developed, urbanized areas with lower average incomes. Projects to restore natural watersheds and habitats in the midst of developed areas are so important because not only are they revitalizing areas for wildlife in the midst of areas affected by humans, but they are also enabling people to be exposed to wildlife and natural processes. If we want people to care about environmental justice, they need to be exposed to environments around them, so they can build a familiarity and understanding with nature and the ways in which it affects them, and how they can impact it in ways they were not aware of."
