Nathan’s family moved to the United States from Guam when he was very young. They were hoping for a better life, but it didn’t come easily. Nathan is the youngest of five children and his parents worked hard to provide for their family. 

His father took a job as a security guard but had to stop working to stay home to take care of his family. His mother worked double shifts as a nurse. She took care of others—but neglected her own health. Due to a lack of healthcare, they had to ration medicine or find off the shelf substitutes to address her health issues. 

Meanwhile, Nathan was studying and working hard, hoping for a better future. But he was angry at God. Why had these cruel things happened to his family? Nathan found solace in his school studies and dreamed of going to college. 

In 2015 he received a full-ride scholarship to Trinity Lutheran College. He would be the first in his family to attend college and honor the sacrifice of his mom and dad.  

Just when everything seemed to be on track, the school announced it would be closing and his scholarship could not be honored. As if things weren’t difficult enough, his mom passed away, leaving a huge hole in the family. 

Things began to change when Nathan was accepted at Seattle Pacific University—and was awarded scholarship funds to make it possible to attend. Faith, perseverance, and the support of the donors who give to Trinity Education Foundation made all the difference! 

Now, Nathan sees his calling and his future more clearly. 

“After all that had happened,” he says, “being accepted at a new university and awarded the scholarships from Trinity Education Foundation felt like confirmation that God’s plan was at work. Because of Trinity Education Foundation I am able to complete my degree knowing I don’t have to worry about school debt when I graduate.” 

Nathan is planning to attend seminary and has been accepted at Duke University and Princeton University. He is praying for God’s direction regarding which school to choose. Your prayers for Nathan are also appreciated.
